Over the counter, basic: $200 to $600 a pair
Made for perceived mild to moderate hearing loss in adults. Preset programs or a simple app, disposable or rechargeable batteries, a one-year warranty is typical. Good for a first pair and for people who mainly struggle with TV and quiet conversation.
Over the counter, premium: $600 to $1,500 a pair
Bluetooth streaming from a phone, rechargeable cases, better noise handling in restaurants, remote adjustments through an app, and longer warranties. This tier is where most OTC buyers who want a device they'll wear all day end up.
Prescription through a clinic: $2,000 to $7,000 a pair
The price bundles the hearing test, a custom fitting to your results, follow-up visits, cleaning, and service. It's the right route for more severe loss, uneven loss between ears, or anyone who wants a professional managing the device.
Costs that aren't on the price tag
Batteries (disposables run a few dollars a month per pair), replacement domes and filters, out-of-warranty repairs, and, for clinic devices, visits beyond the bundle. Over three years these can add a few hundred dollars to an OTC pair and more to a clinic pair.
Paying for them
Most sellers offer financing. Hearing aids are generally an eligible expense for HSA and FSA accounts. Whether a health plan contributes depends on the plan; ask yours before you shop.
